Hey teachers! Another summer's in the books, and that back-to-school energy is starting to hum. While the kiddos are busy debating T. Swift vs. Minecraft backpacks, you're probably neck-deep in curriculum planning and classroom prep.

But hold on, because I've got some good news: this year, we're ditching the dusty chalk and embracing the 21st century.  Here are the teacher tech essentials you actually need to conquer the classroom and maybe even have a little fun while you're at it:

Back to School Tech Essential #1: Document Camera: Your Show-and-Tell Superhero:

Forget messy overhead projectors or awkwardly trying to hold up a student's worksheet. This tech essential, a good document camera is your BFF.  And let's be honest, districts may not think paying for one is all that important. It instantly displays anything you put under it – textbooks, student work, that oddly shaped science project – onto your whiteboard or projector screen. Plus the kids always like coming up to the camera and seeing their hands. Instant engagement.

My pick: The 8MP USB Document Camera for Teachers is a breeze to set up and use. Plus, it's got a light and image reversal so you can cram it into that small spot in your classroom and still make it work!

Music can be a powerful tool for setting the mood, calming students during transitions, or even energizing them for a brain break. This might be my favorite back to school tech essential. A portable Bluetooth speaker lets you easily play music from your phone or computer, wherever you are in the classroom.

My pick: The JBL Flip 6 - Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker is small but mighty, with surprisingly good sound quality and a waterproof design (just in case of accidental anything sticky spills).

Back to School Tech Essential #3: Wireless Presenter: Ditch the Podium Dance

Stop tethering yourself to your desk. A wireless presenter gives you the freedom to roam the classroom while controlling your presentations. Click through slides, highlight key points, even use a laser pointer to play classroom "Where's Waldo" – all without tripping over cords. I will give it to my students when it is their turn to present and you can see the excitement level rise!

My pick: The Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote is sleek, powerful, and gets bonus points for its cool spotlight feature.

Let's be real, those hand-crank sharpeners are a workout (and a major time suck). Then regular electric sharpeners ended up being a pain when the pencils were jammed into them! This amazing little creation does the work for you! Just put the pencil in, it grabs it, brings it down to sharpen, then brings it back up when it's finished! The kids LOVE it! (And honestly, I like watching it too!)

My pick: The AFMAT Electric Pencil Sharpener, Robot Pencil Sharpener is too easy to use and saves you the headache of explaining not to try to sharpen the little stub of a pencil again!

More Must-Haves for a Smooth School Year

  • A comfy pair of shoes: I'll be the first to admit I need to follow this rule myself!. Invest in some good walking shoes or supportive sneakers.

  • A reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated (and caffeinated... always caffeinated, if needed!)

  • Healthy snacks: Avoid the vending machine temptations with some pre-packed nuts, fruit, or yogurt. I'm such a sucker for some pistacios!

  • A sense of humor: Because, let's face it, teaching is way more fun when you can laugh.

  • Classroom organization bins: Keep supplies tidy and easily accessible. This one is my favorite for storing and organizing those legos!

  • A good first aid kit: Be prepared for minor bumps and scrapes. I know I always run out of the bandaids from the nurse kit!

  • An emergency stash of candy: For those days when you (or your students... mostly you) need a little pick-me-up.
